Ernest GILBEY was born at Qua Fen Common, Soham (Newmarket Q3-1911 3B:890) son of Arthur and Harriet Ann GILBEY (mother née JONES). He had an elder brother Arthur [1909}.
He married Ivy A CUTCHEY in Soham (Newmarket Q4-1932 3B:1367). Their children were Ivy M [1933 -Newmarket], Raymond E [1935 - Cambridge], George [1937 - Cambridge] and Patrick [1940 - Cambridge]. In the 1939 register at 59 Downfields, Soham were his wife Ivy A [16-5-1914], daughter Ivy M [26-4-1933] later JOHNSON and son Raymond E [2-7-1935] There are 2 closed records. In April 1940 they were living at 43 Downfields, Soham. but appear to have moved to Bedford (residence given for this soldier in Army RoH). |
The end of the 2nd battle of Alamein, Tobruk had been re-taken the day before and the Germans were in full retreat towards Tocra. CWGC have 253 Royal Artillery deaths for the 14th November, only 2 with no known graves, which suggests many presumed deaths given for that date after the rapid advances that had been made, and there was a chance for a proper roll call. Only two have named graves, the rest are on the Alamein memorial |
